Keeping intelligence in the hands of medical writers during technology selection and implementation

Applied technology in medical writing has received renewed attention across the industry since the introduction of Generative AI. The prospects of automating various activities in the medical writing process have been presented at conferences, promoted, and discussed but frequently without true consideration of the medical writer, the process of medical writing, and the needs of medical writers.  

As a case in point, the clinical study report has many sections that require various levels of insight, interpretation, and judgment to ensure the reflection of the clinical results is properly presented with the correct insights and conclusions. Technologists may imply the feasibility of automation of the CSR without clarifying where and how the automation will be performed as well as how the users will manage their work, review the outputs, and assess the best practices/principles of MW applied to the CSR in the future.  

To effectively deploy technology and GenAI for medical writing (e.g., in CSR) organizations need to know how the technology will work, which sections of the document will be automated, how it will truly assist the medical writer, and what the medical writer’s responsibility will be post deployment of the solution. The session will discuss the expectations, limitations, and requirements of technology to be effective for medical writers. Likewise, the session with provider new entrants to technology for medical writing with considerations on what to look for (internally or with suppliers) when assessing technology.
